How to Grow an Oak Tree from an Acorn

Small Oak Trees Are Super Cute!

I live right next to the university I attend, so I normally walk to and from school. It's a nice little walk under a canopy of oak trees. I always collect small pine cones and acorns on my walks home from school for my cats because they go crazy for them. They love to run around the apartment chasing the acorns and pine cones around. Maja also loves to play fetch with them, its just too cute!

So here's how to grow an oak tree from an acorn:

  1. Find some healthy acorns, without cracks or anything.

  2. Soak them in water for 10-24 hours.

  3. Stick two or three toothpicks in the top half of the acorn, pointy part facing down.

  4. Get a glass, a vase, or a glass bottle and fill with water to the top.

  5. Stick the acorn in the water making sure its nearly all covered in water. You don't want the acorn to dry out.

  6. Set near a sunny window.

  7. Plant in soil once the acorn starts sprouting.

I can't remember how long it took for mine to start spouting, but I'm sure it was at least a month or two. Out of three acorns only one started sprouting. That's the one in the picture here.

I think the small tree looks really nice in a vase or glass bottle. Im going to transfer mine to a bigger bottle for a while, and eventually I'll plant it in soil.
