Always safe to water empty self-watering pot?

We have an indoor tree in a self-watering pot. Can I water it whenever the water level indicator says that it is empty or is there a risk for over-watering? Or is it depending on the plant? (say it's not! :)

I think its fine to keep adding water to it since it's like as big as a tree. But if it were a small plant in a small plant I might say no.

Thanks! That is a great help. I will keep watering when it is empty then.
